What is CashBack for Communities money being used for?

 

The pilot project's aim was to enhance young peoples life skills that would compliment their home environment and lead to greater independence. 

 

Describe what life was like for this young person when they first got involved:

 

David is a very chatty, friendly 18 year old who lives at home with his mum and step dad. David is a very independent young man who has many life skills that he uses on a daily basis, such as cooking microwave meals, walking his dog, going to the shops. Davids family, girlfriend, friends and dogs are all very important to him. David has completed a life skills college course and is now hoping to gain employment. David requires a little support to ensure that he fully understands what is being relayed.  David is enthusiastic about the life skills pilot programme ( later named by the young people as CAD - Control, Alt, Delete)  and is looking forward to enhancing his skills further in order that he can lead as independent a life as possible. David identified a number of life skills that he would like to either gain or develop further such as :  Keeping Healthy   Money Management  Internet Safety  Cooking  Cleaning the house.   David, is a very anxious young man who can at times lack in confidence.  David would like support on how to manage this anxiety more effectively in order to build on his confidence thus improving on his ability to increase his skill base.

 

In what way is this different from other experiences?

 

Whilst David completed a life skills college course, this experience did not seem to affect David as an individual or the way he lived.  The Partners in Play pilot project was aimed at a more indivdualised experience.  

 

What intervention have workers made?

 

As this was a 10 week pilot scheme the workshops where only one session long.  The young people were introduced to a variety of life skills which were chosen during the introductory session as skills they felt as a group could support them.    Emotional Wellbeing and Mindfulness Workshops -    David was supported by staff to create an anxiety tool kit box where he now keeps his strategy tools (stress balls, breathing technique sheets, colouring sheets, lego pieces, positive thoughts fortune teller)  David keeps this tool kit in the a shelf in his bedroom and has recently added other tools that he has found to be helpful.     Ironing workshop - David was provided with a step by step visual guide that he can refer to when practicing his ironing at home.      David was provided with a visual aid of what the labels on cleaning products mean in order that he can refer to this whilst at home.  This also increases his confidence and supports David to seek information increasing his responsibility indicators. 

 

What change or difference has this made to them?

 

David participated in several workshops over the 10 week period.  David found the emotional health and mindfulness workshops particularly helpful as this provided David with a range of different strategies (Yoga, physical exercise, mindfulness -homemade stress balls, breathing techniques, music techniques, Mindful Observance) that he could adopt in order to help his anxiety levels.  David's anxiety can prohibit him from completing a simple task on a daily basis and David has reported that the strategies he learned in these workshops have been very helpful in supporting him to manage his anxiety better.  David now understands the importance of self care in relation to a healthy mind and has introduced physical exercise to his week, this has not only improved his fitness levels but has also provided David with a structure and routine to his week which in turn appears to have increased his confidence and self esteem levels.      David's aim is to live as independent a life as possible and David reported that the running a home workshops were helpful in providing David with the basic knowledge of, what is involved in running a home.  During the workshops David was introduced to ironing, making a bed, washing floors and  cleaning products.  David learned about what the different warning signs mean on the bottles such as  - causes skin burns, eye damage or harmful to the environment and how to store different products.  David uses these new learned skills to carry out tasks at home and now has a rota at home, where he helps his mum to clean the floors, where he can safely use and store cleaning products and can independently change his bed sheets.  

 

David was introduced to ironing, David had never used an iron before the workshop and is now able to find out what temperature his clothes should be ironed at, how to adjust the temperature on the iron, where to put the water, and has learned about the dangers of burning himself, his clothes and ensuring that the iron is kept upright. David has reported that since learning about ironing he is able to iron some of his own clothes at home and is keen to keep practicing so he can iron more complicated clothes which has increased his confidence and self esteem.      Cooking Workshop - David participated in a cooking workshop where he was provided with the opportunity to chose healthy toppings for a pizza, learn how to chop vegetables, work an over and time how long his pizza would take to cook.  This has encouraged David to consider trying other foods rather than consistently using microwave ready meals.
