RADWORX is part of Regen:fx youth organisation. It provides urban activities such as skateboarding, rollerblading, BMX and skootering to young people in South Lanarkshire. From beginner to trainee leadership qualifications there is a clear pathway to progress or to simply socialise and have fun.
What was life like for this young person when they first got involved?
He was shy, very quiet and had no confidence. He didn't seem to have many friends, he was slightly overweight and uncoordinated. Although having a brother and sister, the age gap was massive and he seemed to be a little lost in his direction. He started learning to skateboard a few years ago. He's not the most talented rider but he loves the sport and practices regularly.
Now he's seen as cool in school because he skateboards at a respectable level. He's happier at home and generally a friendlier young chap.
What difference has Radworx made to them?
He's now much more confident and coordinated. He still comes along to the lessons and is a lot more content in himself. He has a group of friends who all skateboard now. He looks fitter and happier in his general appearance and he voices how much he is having fun.
He is currently picking subjects at school and is thinking of his career options. He mentioned becoming an R.A.F pilot. It's looking like he has much more direction and focus.
What did youth workers do to help?
We encouraged a positive mental attitude. Learning to skateboard taught him how to cope with failure/falling and not to give up. Like life, it is how you pick yourself up and move on - not just lying there complaining. We befriended him and encouraged him to keep coming along to the lessons. In short the youth worker showed a little belief in him and he done the rest.
"He's now influencing others in a good way. All the young people coming along are getting an experience they probably wouldn't have otherwise."
